Structural Engineering Intern                            Summer '15

Somat Engineering, Inc., Michigan, USA

  • Analyzed 6 self-supported steel communication towers about 150 ft high using tnx ToweR

  • Recommended the changes in tower members to facilitate placing additional loads

  • Employed LPILE and RISA Foundation to analyze tower foundations

  • Evaluated shear and overturning checks for mat and pile foundations

  • Involved in weekly meetings with senior engineers to discuss the project progress

  • Conducted preliminary field classification of soils using USCS

  • Managed soil borings at 4 sites and assisted Geotechnical crew in ‘I-75 Modernization’ project by MDOT

  • In addition to working on technical aspects of the project, I have had the opportunity to involve in weekly meetings with PEs to discuss the client demands, project progress and strategies to meet deadlines. Working on tower foundations gave me an insight to foundation analysis and design which I then bolstered by completing a course in Foundation Structures.

  • During my internship, I had the opportunity to interact with managers and HRs to know about the processes involved in bidding contracts, scheduling and completing of projects.

  • Furthermore, my experience in managing soil boring sites in ‘I-75 Modernization’ project gave me a chance to communicate with sub-contractors and MDOT inspectors before starting the site works on roadways which aided me to develop my organizational and communication skills.
